Obama Announces New Policy Protecting DREAMers

On Friday, June 15, 2012, President Obama announced an exciting new immigration policy.  He offered "deferred action" to young people to avoid deportation, attend school, and contribute legally to the American economy.

As stated in a memo by Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano:

"Effective immediately, certain young people who were brought to the United States through no fault of their own as young children and meet several key criteria will be considered for relief from removal from the country or entered into removal proceedings. Those who demonstrate that they meet the criteria will be eligible to receive deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal."

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services have produced a summary of the policy change, including answers to frequently asked questions.
